Assessing the Impact of Climate Change on Brown Planthopper (BPH) Population Dynamics

Abstract

The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens, is a major pest affecting rice crops in India, with populations highly sensitive to climatic variables such as temperature, humidity and rainfall. In recent years, western Uttar Pradesh has experienced shifts in climate patterns, raising concerns about their impact on BPH population dynamics and pest management strategies. This study examines the influence of climate change on BPH populations in this region, leveraging climate data from 2021 to 2024, including average annual temperatures, humidity levels and rainfall patterns. Historical climate data reveal that the mean annual temperature in western Uttar Pradesh has increased by 0.7°C over the past two decades, accompanied by erratic rainfall distribution and longer periods of high humidity. These conditions have provided a favorable environment for BPH, which thrives in warmer and humid conditions. Increased temperatures, especially during the rice-growing season, accelerate BPH life cycles, leading to higher population densities and multiple overlapping generations within a single cropping season. In this context, regions within western Uttar Pradesh with consistent monsoon patterns exhibit prolonged humidity levels that support the survival and reproduction of BPH.
